Wanner Wins 1A State Trap Title

Powered by three straight perfect rounds and a final round of 23, St. Mary’s Junior Isaac Wanner captured the Overall High Gun and Men’s High Gun at the Class 1A State Trap Championship at the North Dakota State High School Clay Target League (ND CTL) State Tournament at the Shooting Park in Horace, ND on Fri. June 18.  With a total of 98 coming on 75 straight targets crushed, Wanner becomes the first Missouri River Clay Target League (MR CTL) participant to win a men’s state championship in any class.

Wanner, who had finished third in the conference 1A-5 spring league, averaged more than two and a half targets above his season mean of 21.9 at the event to edge out Oakes’ Ty Awender who finished with a total of 97, and Grant Larson of Leeds High School who took third with a 95.  Ava Gillig of Beulah High School took the ladies’ title with a total of 88 in Varsity competition.

Eight shooters from St. Mary’s and two shooters from Shiloh Christian participated in the first day of trap shooting at the three-day state tournament.  Notable finishes among them were:

Novice Male
T11th – Warren Tobiasz, 75

JV Female
9th – Madeline Erickson, 72

JV Male
T16th – Chase Hourigan, 83

In team competition, Beulah High School took first place on a total of 450, followed by Dakota Prairie High School (444) in second, and Munich High School (437) in third. 

Up next, Bismarck High School will represent MR CTL in Class 2A competition on the second day of the State Tournament on Sat. June 19.  Then Century, Legacy and Mandan will take the field on Sunday in the final day of competition for the Class 3A title.
